Community Partnerships
The Coconut Grove Sailing Club recognizes it has a responsibility to help create awareness of our marine environment, and promote responsible recreational use of Biscayne Bay, Miami River, and our ocean. The Club has been active in these efforts for over 64 years, and they continue today.
Marine Science Academy
This innovative new program is a partnership between the Coconut Grove Sailing Club and Miami-Dade County Public Schools division of Life Skills and Special Projects. Middle and High School students from across Miami-Dade County are given an opportunity to participate in a program during the school day which brings them to the Club for classroom and "hands on" experiences in a marine environment. City of Miami students are given preference in class offerings. For more information about this exciting new program, please contact our Sailing Director at 305-444-4571 ext.11
Virrick Park Pool Outreach
A summer time outreach effort, the Virrick Park Pool program brings the boat to the students! A small training boat - the "Pram" - is brought to this urban City of Miami park, where they can learn first hand the basic parts of a boat - and are engaged in performing drills with the boat in the pool to create familiarity and a sense of comfort with the boat before moving over to the bay, and the CGSC. Even though Virrick Park is less than a mile from the bay, many of these children never see or experience the rich environment of those waters. This program encourages children to explore the Bay after becoming familiar with the Pram, and has been a great success.
